Transcending space and time: Ink Painting Lab led by Huiqi
In-person, 7pm - 9pm, ET
Every Tuesday, November 26 - February 18
89 5th Ave 702, Union Square, NY
Ink painting holds an ever-dissolving mirage, where soul and form intertwine with reality and illusion. Shades and tones are blended between dry and wet, light and shadow. Either meticulous or expressive, its brushstrokes create the bones, flesh, and soul, as phantoms, as peaks, as wind. Imagery twists and turns, the cosmos inverts, leaving space unfilled, with resonant echoes lingering endlessly.
In the short days of winter, at dusk, the Ink Painting Lab opens to explore the folded dimensions beneath the paper and brush with artist Huiqi. Introductory courses revisit major Chinese dynasties, shaping figures, landscapes, and flora. Advanced courses examine Zen and Buddhist philosophies, casting ink upon folk arts. Contemporary courses offer new calligraphic techniques, encompassing cross-media ink practices and exploring the female perspective within ink art.
When ink meets paper, it spreads and flows, showing extreme sensitivity and randomness. Ink painting, with this warm tolerance, offers insight into nature and the essence of creation, allowing even the boundaries of a steel jungle to dissolve. In the same spirit, Huiqi’s teaching incorporates experimental music, inviting uncontrollable and untamed notes to company, seeking spontaneity, chance, and uncertainty.
The perpetual collapse of the present accumulates as history. No one ever steps in the same river twice; yet with its waters, ink diffuses, and that river shall manifest in your hands. Welcome to the lab. Grasp your brush and paint your mind, time, and surroundings.
This course invites you to explore ink painting through a contemporary lens! We will integrate traditional ink painting techniques with contemporary art approaches, beginning with classic works to delve into current ink practices. From an interdisciplinary perspective, we’ll examine how media such as the body and video influence modern ink art, expanding your artistic vision. Throughout the course, you’ll not only engage in hands-on practice but also study art theory and history, discussing the tensions between tradition and modernity to foster both development and innovation. Together, we’ll discuss, learn, visit exhibitions, and create art. By the end, you’ll complete an independent artwork.
