草木染，也称植物染、植染，是采用天然植物的根、茎、皮、叶、花、果等部分提取或制作染料，为织物或其他待染物染色的技艺和过程。
中国关于草木染的历史，可以追溯到周朝。《诗经·小雅·采绿》写道：“终朝采绿，不盈一匊。予发曲局，薄言归沐。终朝采蓝，不盈一襜。五日为期，六日不詹。”记录的是两种古老的染料：荩草、蓝草。
远家从2012年开始用草木为衣服着色，经过13年的时间，草木染逐渐发展为品牌的经典系列。13年来，品牌联合创始人吴开建作为远家草木染开发的负责人在世界各地探访学习、深入钻研、研发草木染技术，并创办了驻色草木染工坊。今年2月，联合国教科文组织为他颁发了「国际非遗传承人」的荣誉称号。历经多年的沉淀，写就了《驻色--十二月草木染》一书，并于今年7月出版。
书中将草木染技艺分为12个月细细讲述，记录二十余种草木染的方法。以工匠视角毫无保留地阐述他多年来苦心钻研的草木染技艺，和追寻理想生命状态、生活方式的过程。经过十多年的发展与推广，草木染逐渐在被各大一线品牌采纳并使用到衣物的生产中。为了系统科普以及更好地传播草木染，开建书写了《驻色--十二月草木染》这本书，献给愿意凝视大地与自然，传承古老意志的朋友们。
