白族有着悠久的农耕历史，古代的农业生产取决于大自然的支配，尤其是对农作物丰收有着重要决定作用的雨水，对人们的生存和发展有着极其重要的影响，因此能控制水、能降雨的“水神”崇拜在白族信仰体系中具有重要的地位。白族水神经历了从道教水神三官之水官到巫教水神的毒蛇、金鱼、金螺，佛教水神的难陀、白难陀等龙王，再到本土水神段赤城的演变过程。它蕴含在“段赤城斩蟒”“小黄龙大战大黄龙”等传说故事中，也体现在民间“捞尸会”“烧包节”及感生神话“九隆文本”里。
本书收集了大量不同版本的民间水神故事、民间白族水神图片及有水神记载的碑文等，充分展示了人类学视野下白族的水神信仰体系。
